A Special Event is any large indoor or outdoor event like:
- Party Tournament
- Street Dance
Other entertainment or celebration of limited duration that is held on public or private property or any event that will require the use, parking concerns, traffic generation, or an increase in demand of the city's infrastructure.
The City of Cottage Grove has a Special Events permit ordinance in place in order to promote the health, safety, and welfare of all residents and visitors of the city. This is to ensure that special events do not create disturbances, become nuisances, menace or threaten life, health and property, disrupt traffic or threaten or damage private or public property.
Any person or organization desiring to hold a special event within any zoning district in the city must first obtain a special event permit from the city in addition to any other permits required for the event by state law or city ordinance. An application for a permit to hold a special event application must be completed, signed and forwarded to the City Clerk Office at least sixty days prior to the first day of the event.
Walks, Runs, or Parade Celebration Permits
In addition to the special event application, a separate run or parade application needs to be included.
A permit is not required for:
- Any event attended by fewer than three hundred persons that does not require any special services

- The use of traditional public forums as alternative channels of communication by the public, provided that such use is for the free exercise of constitutionally protected activities and does not disrupt or interfere with traffic on public streets or the use of public places by other members of the public

- Family reunions
- Funeral processions
- Graduation parties
- Wedding receptions
An application for a permit to hold a special event application must be completed, signed and forwarded to the City Clerk Office at least sixty days prior to the first day of the event.
