Overview
The Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation (hereafter ACHP) is an eight-member voluntary advisory group designated as the heritage preservation commission of the City. The committee recommendations to the City Council include, but are not limited to, designations of historic sites, landmarks, or historic districts. The committee shall conduct continuous surveys of cultural resources of the City for which there is reason to believe are, or will be, eligible for such designations.
Public Policy
The protection, preservation, perpetuation and use of places, areas, buildings, structures and other objects having a special historical, community or aesthetic interest or value is a public necessity and is required in the interest of the people.
Purpose
The purpose of the ACHP is to:
- Safeguard the cultural resources of the city by preserving sites, structures, districts and landmarks which reflect elements of the city's history in the following:
- Architectural history
- Cultural
- Economic
- Political
- Social
- Protect and enhance the city's attractions to residents and visitors
- Foster civic pride in the beauty and notable achievements of the past
- Enhance the visual and aesthetic character, diversity and interest of the city
- Promote the use and preservation of historic sites and landmarks for the education and general welfare of the people of the city
Duties
- The ACHP is responsible for the preparation and periodic review and update of the cultural resource management plan of the City.
- The ACHP shall maintain a register of historic sites and landmarks in the City.
- The ACHP shall review and make recommendations to the Council concerning proposed alternations to a designated landmark or historic site.
- The ACHP shall review all applications for building permits, preliminary and final plats that affect, or are suspected of having an affect on, designated landmarks or historic sites.

Forms are also available for pick up at City Hall. Applications are accepted on a continuous basis and kept on file for one year.
