Explorer Post

The program provides youths with the opportunity to enhance not only law enforcement skills but life skills as well. The Post will consist of hands on scenario type training with participation in competitions throughout the state. Scenarios that will be taught consisting of a variety of topics from firearms, felony traffic stops, search and arrest procedures to building searches and many more.

Explorers will attend training twice per month from 6 to 8 pm at the Cottage Grove Public Safety Department. The meeting day still to be determined.

Expectations of Explorers

  • Attend meetings on a regular basis with a positive and ready to work attitude
  • Conduct yourself in a manner that reflects well on yourself, the Post and the Police Department at all times
  • Take responsibility for yourself and for your partners
  • Be respectful to Advisors and other members of the Post at all times
  • Have Fun!!

What an Explorer Is

  • An Explorer is youth ages 14 to 21 (must have completed 8th grade)
  • Live in Cottage Grove and/or attend school in Cottage Grove
  • Youth who are in good standing with the Police Department and Schools
  • Interested in learning about Law Enforcement through hands on training

How to Join

  • Complete a Cottage Grove Police Department Explorer Application (PDF)
  • Submit either in person or by mail to:
    • Cottage Grove Police Department/Explorer Advisor

  • Complete and pass an interview panel with Advisors
  • Prior to starting applicant must pass a criminal background check and a fee (amount of $14 yearly)
