Description

The Highway 61 Hockey Academy's mission is to develop well balanced hockey players into stronger skaters, smarter players, and poised individuals through improved athleticism both on and off the ice.  Participants should be self-disciplined and appreciate the rewards of hard work.

Players diligent in following the program regimen will assuredly see improvement as a hockey player, athlete and individual.  All players must be able to skate independently.

Goalies

Professional Goalie Instructors will lead dedicated goalies each session on modern goalie specific fundamentals to build skills and confidence.  The small group approach allows for precise skill learning to build upon drills.  Goalies MUST register separate from skaters each session and may spend both hours of the session on ice.

Bantams/U15

Intense skill development by high level coaches will concentrate on skating, stick handling, passing, shooting and scoring.  Coaches will emphasize that players master individual edge work to create speed and reactiveness while gaining puck possession, player movement to be ready to make plays, and using all of your body to create hockey strength to be successful on ice.  Time on the studio rink (2 sessions per week) will involve playing in competitive 3 on 3 games which require faster thinking.

Peewee/U12/Squirt/U10

Players will develop strong skating skills focusing on reactive play, skating transitions in all directions, and using upper body to increase speed.  Coaches will also focus on team play moving away from the puck to create offensive plays and learning how to get the puck back as quickly as possible.  Time on the studio rink (2 sessions per week) will involve playing in competitive 3 on 3 games which require faster thinking.  Off Ice Training (2 sessions per week) will also consist of fun team games that encourage mental processing and quick decision making.

Mites

Players will be divided into two groups; groups will be sent out prior to the start of camp.  Sessions provide small group skills to break the skills down making them easier to learn.  Coaches provide direction and lead drills by example; making the skaters excited to learn.  Small group skills focus on forward and backward crossovers, edges, hockey skating skills, stopping, and transitioning from forward to backward.  Time on the studio rink (2 sessions per week) will involve playing in competitive 3 on 3 games which require faster thinking.  Off Ice Training (2 sessions per week) will also consist of fun team games that encourage mental processing and quick decision making.
