The prairie before you is unique and rare in Minnesota. This type of prairie is called a sand-gravel prairie.  Because they are formed on sand and gravel, the plants and animals that live here are those adapted to dry environments. The vegetation is sparse because the soils are not as fertile as other prairies, making Grey Cloud Dunes SNA sensitive to disturbance. So, as you enjoy this special place remember your visit can have an impact. The park was named after Grey Cloud Island and the sand dune geology.
