Hamlet is Cottage Grove's largest park with more than 150 acres of park and open space. It is home to one of Cottage Grove's most beautiful trail systems. Along the two plus mile trailway you'll see nature at its finest by weaving through ponds, waterways, woods and grasses.
Hamlet Park is also home to seven baseball fields, three soccer fields, two tennis courts, two basketball courts, two sand volleyball courts, two football fields, a skateboard park and ice-skating rinks.
The building, a picnic shelter, several picnic tables, grills, and a large play structure make Hamlet Park the perfect park to rent for large group gatherings. The park's name originated from nearby Hamlet Avenue.
William Crockett Fields at Hamlet Park
In 2022, the city's Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Commission recommended that the south baseball field complex at Hamlet be renamed "William Crockett Fields at Hamlet Park." Here are some facts the commission considered in this process:
- Of 1,557 United States soldiers missing in action during the Vietnam War, 33 were from Minnesota. One of them was William Crockett of Cottage Grove.
- William Crockett has a memorial marker at Fort Snelling, but no one knows what is buried there (as is common with all missing in action soldiers).
- William Crockett grew up just a few blocks from Hamlet Park. It is presumed he spent much time playing there like so many in that neighborhood did.
There is a plaque remembering William Crockett at the south baseball field.
