City Seeks Nominations for Annual Garden Award

Cottage Grove, MN – June 22, 2017 –The City of Cottage Grove is seeking nominations for its annual Garden Award, which focuses on sustainable gardening this year.  Residents may nominate themselves, or their favorite gardener or organization for the 2017 Cottage Grove Sustainable Garden Award.  Nominations are due by 4 p.m. on Friday, July 21. 

To help encourage water conservation, this year’s garden award is all about sustainable gardens.  The City is looking for gardens using planting design and watering techniques that minimize water use through organic gardens, native and prairie plants, rock gardens, rain gardens, rain barrels, backyard composting, mulching, and the elimination of chemical use.

All nominated properties must be within Cottage Grove. Contestants may not win in consecutive years. Winners will be announced at a City Council meeting in August. 

The 2017 categories are:

  • Residential - Based on overall appearance, plant variety and arrangement, uniqueness, creativity, environmental aesthetics, and upkeep of the entire garden.
  • Commercial - Based on overall appearance, plant variety and arrangement, uniqueness, creativity, environmental aesthetics, and upkeep of the entire garden.  This includes all Cottage Grove organizations such as businesses, churches, schools or nonprofits.
