Lions Club International Foundation Donates $100K for Inclusive Playground in Cottage Grove

Cottage Grove, Minn. – May 17, 2017 – The Lions Club International Foundation has made a $100,000 donation to be used towards the building of an Inclusive Playground in Cottage Grove.  This grant means the 24,000-square-foot playground is 100 percent funded.  The cost to build the playground is about $800,000, including in-kind services.

The playground will have an area focused on gross motor skills; a challenge area with high decks, slides, climbers, slopes and tunnels; an area designed for big movements with swings and spinning; an focused on sensory, social and imaginative play with interactive panels, musical instruments, sand and water, a sensory garden, and a cozy village; and areas appropriate for different age levels.

The planning and fundraising on the playground began in 2013 with the formation of a task force led by Cottage Grove’s Recreation Supervisor, Molly Pietruszewski. The eight-member task force planned the playground and drove the fundraising efforts with the support of the City Council and the Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Commission.  The City committed $350,000 to build the playground and more than 100 businesses, organizations and individuals donated funds to make the playground a reality.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held May 10 and construction of the Inclusive Playground will begin this summer. The playground will be built at Woodridge Park located at 9000 90th Street in Cottage Grove and will be the largest of its kind in the State of Minnesota.
