Police Involved in Police Pursuit
Suspect fled and barricaded himself in garage – Now in Custody
On June 1, 2018 at 12:22 p.m., Cottage Grove Police received a call of a theft in progress at the Cottage Grove Target, 8655 East Point Douglas. Upon arrival to Target, the suspect had pushed a cart full of merchandise out to a waiting vehicle. The suspect drove off as the officer attempted to stop the vehicle.
The suspect did not stop and officers pursued the vehicle. During the pursuit, a passerby attempted to help and veered towards the suspect vehicle missing and striking the squad. An officer continued to pursue the suspect vehicle and attempted a pit maneuver causing the vehicle to spin out. The suspect vehicle drove through yards hitting fences in an attempt to escape officers.
The pursuit came to an end in the 8600 block of Grenadier Ave. The suspect vehicle tried to drive through the yards but when he was unsuccessful, he reversed and rammed the squad. He then fled on foot. Witnesses pointed officers in the right direction and saw him enter an unlocked detached garage in the 8800 block of Granada Ave.
The Washington County SWAT team was activated after officers set up a perimeter. After the suspect failed to speak with negotiators, gas was used and entry was made into the garage. The suspect was hiding in the truck of the vehicle in the garage. The suspect refused to follow any commands and was combative with arresting officers.
After the apprehension, the suspect was transported to Regions Hospital. He has not been identified as of this time. Two Cottage Grove police officers were transported to Regions Hospital to be evaluated. Both officers have been released from the hospital.
The incident is still under investigation and charges are pending. The MN State Patrol is investigating the crash of the pickup truck and squad.
