Cottage Grove requires door-to-door sales people to be licensed or registered, which involves background checks of both businesses and individuals, and authorized individuals must carry a license or certificate of registration on their person. A license or registration is not required for persons exercising protected free speech, or children under the age of 18 attempting to sell products or services through a school, church, or other organization to which they belong (such as Girl Scout Cookies).
While most solicitors follow the rules, occasionally a group or individual does not. If you encounter anyone that conducts business in a way that is misleading, aggressive, threatening, or they do not leave your property when asked or otherwise give you reason for concern, please call 911.
Residents can ban door-to-door sales on your property by posting a “No Peddlers or Solicitors” sign.
